Furthermore, each of the novellas features multiracial Haitians, descending in class from the elite to the poor intellectual. The book is such a thinly-veiled attack on Papa Doc that she really had no choice but exile. Each story fully indicates the horror of living in Duvalier's Haiti, which is the reason why the author chose exile.
